Prioritising a richer life with family and friends, he made a bold move—a strategic semiretirement that brought a long-desired work-life balance. Under his guidance, the UAE has ensured peace, prosperity and security for over 10,000,000 residents and citizens.

My gratitude pours forth to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose visionary leadership ignited the dreams of millions, including mine. Through his resolute commitment to progress, he has sculpted a landscape where aspirations take flight.

From the uncertainty of a young man armed with only a diploma and a handful of dollars to the heights of achievement, it chronicles the 33-year odyssey of a dreamer. Within these pages, you’ll find the echoes of my dreams, the echoes of my struggles and the echoes of my triumphs.

Prologue

In the cramped living quarters near Santa Cruz station in Mumbai, shared with five others, I reached a breaking point. There was scarcely enough room to move, let alone stretch out for sleep without bumping into someone. The stench from the communal toilet, used by many, was unbearable, forcing us to pinch our noses before entering. I realized I could not take it anymore.

Over the next seven months, I changed accommodations a few times, but none were satisfactory. Sitting outside luxurious hotels, watching pricey cars zoom by, I couldn’t help but wonder: “Will I ever step foot inside or drive one myself?” From childhood, my dream was to live and work in Dubai; the desire had embedded itself deep in my subconscious.

Each day, navigating the crowded Mumbai trains, enveloped in the scent of cheap perfume and sweat, I clung to my dreams. While diligently working as a draftsman at Niranjan Pandya and Harshad Dholakia Architects, I continued to pursue opportunities in Dubai, scanning newspapers and visiting agencies.

Then, fortune smiled upon me. Representatives from UTCC Wade Adams, a prominent engineering contractor in Dubai, offered me a job with a monthly salary of AED 900. I was elated. I resigned from my job in Mumbai and bid farewell to roommates and friends.
