Prologue

In the cramped living quarters near Santa Cruz station in Mumbai, shared with five others, I reached a breaking point. There was scarcely enough room to move, let alone stretch out for sleep without bumping into someone. The stench from the communal toilet, used by many, was unbearable, forcing us to pinch our noses before entering. I realized I could not take it anymore.
Over the next seven months, I changed accommodations a few times, but none were satisfactory. Sitting outside luxurious hotels, watching pricey cars zoom by, I couldn’t help but wonder: “Will I ever step foot inside or drive one myself?” From childhood, my dream was to live and work in Dubai; the desire had embedded itself deep in my subconscious.
